Royal Manchester Eye Hospital

 

A consultant paediatric ophthalmologist at the Manchester Royal Eye Hospital since 2002. He received advanced paediatric ophthalmology training at Manchester Royal Eye Hospital, Great Ormond Street Hospital, London, and King’s College Hospital, London. The Manchester Royal Eye Hospital is the second largest teaching hospital for ophthalmology in the United Kingdom, and is a major tertiary referral unit taking on complex paediatric ophthalmology cases from all over the North of England. The Manchester Royal Eye Hospital Paediatric Eye Unit comprises a team of four consultant paediatric ophthalmologists and 3 paediatric ophthalmology fellows. Mr Biswas provides a specialist tertiary referral service for paediatric allergic eye disease, paediatric vitreo-retinal disease and paediatric corneal and external eye disease.

Mr Biswas is the Clinical Head of Division for Ophthalmology at the Manchester Royal Eye Hospital (2012) and sit on the Trust Management Board for Central Manchester Foundation Trust. He has overseen the continued expansion of the consultant led services in MREH and will oversee forthcoming projects that include the expansion of ophthalmic services into Trafford General Hospital and the new Altrincham Hospital development.

He has published many articles in the field of ophthalmology in peer reviewed learned journals including paediatric ophthalmology, ophthalmic genetics, congenital cataract surgery, glaucoma and corneal disease and has presented, authored and co-authored many papers at national and international scientific meetings. In addition to this he has written chapters in textbooks of paediatric optometry, paediatric ophthalmology and articles for optometry journals on aspects of paediatric ophthalmology.

He is frequently invited platform speaker at many national and international meetings including the Royal College of Ophthalmologists (for 7 years in a row), British Isles Paediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus Association (BIPOSA), World Society of Paediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus, European Society of Ophthalmology.

His research includes Retinopathy of Prematurity, where he is a principle investigator and Sub principle investigator for several studies. He is also co-investigator for several studies looking at severe allergic eye disease in children.
